CANDI Celebrates 100th Veterinary Nursing Student

City and Islington College’s 100th Veterinary Nursing Student has successfully completed the apprenticeship course to become a Registered Veterinary Nurse.

City and Islington College (CANDI) is celebrating a significant milestone. The college’s 100th Veterinary Nursing Student, Corinne Smart, has completed the course and entered the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) register

Corinne always knew she wanted to work with animals. After completing a degree in Zoology and working as an Animal Care Assistant, she discovered the apprenticeship route. While completing her studies, Corinne chose to work in a charity veterinary hospital as she felt it provided the best learning environment where she could work as part of a large team, treat patients and aim to improve the welfare of both owned and stray animals.

Veterinary Nursing Student, Corinne Smart and her cat Casperino

We caught up with Corinne to find out more about her journey from student to Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN).

Why did you choose CANDI as your place of study?

CANDI is the college associated with the practice I work in. It was conveniently located in North London, and this was important as I had to attend once a week for lessons during term time. The tutors were knowledgeable and helpful, and I found it useful to have that weekly learning opportunity alongside the practical aspects of the role.

Which part of the Veterinary Nurse Apprenticeship did you enjoy the most?

I really enjoyed learning in more depth and being able to apply this knowledge to everyday situations within the practice. The role and the course are very varied and the extent of knowledge that is required is huge, but being able to practice and apply it daily really helped.

I’m incredibly grateful for all the team’s support throughout the process. That was one aspect I really enjoyed, working more closely with a lot of the vets and RVNs in my workplace and support from my clinical supervisor, managers, animal care assistants, other students, and everyone.

What are your plans for the future?

Now, I’m enjoying being an RVN in the environment I love, a charity veterinary hospital. It can be intense and challenging and I feel like I’m still growing and applying new skills. The journey of an RVN is continual growth and learning and it definitely feels that way. I would love to volunteer abroad in the not too far future, there are so many organisations and charities to choose from!

What was the best thing about studying at CANDI?

For me, it was having the opportunity to gain the qualification with the support and guidance of knowledgeable tutors.

About the Veterinary Nursing Apprenticeship

The two-year Veterinary Nursing Apprenticeship is based at the state-of-the-art Centre for Applied Sciences in Angel which comprises a bespoke animal care unit.

Students build their practical skills by working at an RCVS Training Practice while also attending college to advance their theoretical knowledge.

Congratulations to Corinne on completing her course and becoming a Registered Veterinary Nurse!

CCCG and 3t Launch Pioneering Training Courses in Wind Energy

Capital City College Group celebrates the launch of its new wind energy training courses at CONEL’s Enfield site.

Capital City College Group (CCCG) has partnered with 3t, the leading training provider to the global offshore wind market and the UK energy industry. The pioneering collaboration will bring fully-funded specialist wind operations training courses to London for the first time.

To celebrate the partnership, CCCG hosted an exclusive event at The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London’s (CONEL) newly developed wind operations training centre at the Enfield centre on 8 November. Senior leaders from both organisations joined representatives from the Greater London Authority (GLA) and the Department for Education to officially launch the programme at the state-of-the-art site.

Jackie Chapman, Executive Director of Growth and Partnerships, at Capital City College Training said: “Through our brand new facilities and the expertise of 3t’s training instructors and industry-accredited courses, we’re excited to welcome the industry’s future leaders to come and train with us.”

CONEL will offer fully-funded, flexible, four-week bootcamp-style training programmes accredited by the Global Wind Organisation (GWO). 3t’s Training Services division is the UK’s largest provider of GWO training and has the extensive knowledge and expertise to deliver the new ground-breaking program. The skills and qualifications acquired will help local people begin a career in wind – one of the UK’s fastest-growing industries.

Emma Howorth, General Manager for England at 3t said: “Our role as a training provider is to equip the next generation of workers with the skills, confidence, and qualifications to set them up for success in their careers. We’re delighted to be working with CCCG; this partnership has the potential to make a lasting impact on the UK’s energy security.”

The new training facility will support the wind industry’s need for new talent and will contribute to the UK Government’s targets to cut CO2 emissions and achieve ambitious skilled worker targets.

Sarah Maclean from the Department for Education, a director for Skills, Strategy and Engagement said: “The work that’s going on here is incredibly important, to develop the skills needed to fill those jobs in wind power.”

Boost Your Number Skills: Take Part in Number Confidence Week

Do you want to be more confident with numbers?

Nearly half of the working-age population in England have very limited numeracy skills. In fact, it’s so common to hear people say ‘I’m rubbish at maths’ that we often think nothing of it – but the inability to use numbers confidently can cost an individual around £460 a year and have a negative impact on their health and wellbeing. However, there are many free initiatives you can join to help you be more confident with everyday Maths, including Multiply, a programme designed to help adults in London improve their Maths skills.

What is Number Confidence Week?

Number Confidence Week is a week-long initiative taking place from 6-10 November. Organised by the independent charity National Numeracy, Number Confidence Week encourages people to boost their ability when it comes to everyday Maths.

Why is number confidence important?

Feeling confident about your number skills has an impact on daily life – whether you’re working out how many taxis you need for a big group of friends or managing household finances.

Number confidence is about more than being able to reel off times tables or do long division in your head – in-built calculators in our smartphones make that a problem of the past. What’s important is to know how to work out important figures using the technology available to you and understand the numbers you see in your everyday life. It’s about knowing whether the ‘special offer’ in your basket really is a bargain, and being able to recognise if your payslip doesn’t add up.

If you’re a parent or guardian, you’ll probably have to help children with their Maths homework at some point, so why not get ahead of the curve and challenge yourself to refresh what you learnt (or didn’t learn) in school?

Take advantage of free resources

If you had a hard time with Maths at school, don’t let that hold you back. There’s a wide range of useful free resources on offer as part of Number Confidence Week, from habit trackers designed to get you thinking about your own number confidence, to advice on understanding your payslip.

Sometimes, confidence begins with connection, and you can also read a wide range of personal stories about other people’s relationship with numbers.

There’s also a selection of resources and downloadable activities designed to help you support your children in their learning.

Join the National Numeracy Challenge

Don’t be put off by the title, it’s not a competition! In fact, the National Numeracy Challenge is a great way to have a go at some Maths quizzes and challenges to improve how you feel about using numbers in everyday life.

Join a free Multiply course at Capital City College Group

Supported by the Mayor of London, the Multiply programme is designed to help adults in London improve their Maths skills. If you’re 19 and over and don’t have Maths GCSE Grade 4/Grade C or equivalent, then you’ll be eligible to take part in a free numeracy course at CCCG. You can build your confidence as you learn and even gain a qualification.

Multiply courses enable you to:

  • Boost your confidence
  • Manage your finances
  • Enhance your skills for the workplace
  • Access better job opportunities
  • Gain a Maths qualification (if you don’t have one already)
  • Support your kids with their schoolwork

Stacy-Ann Manderson, 46, who completed a CCCG Multiply earlier this year said: “I haven’t studied Maths in years and sometimes when my daughter, who is in Year Five, asks me for help with her homework I don’t know the answer…I’ve really enjoyed the course and I feel more confident with numbers now.”

Take a look at the CCCG Multiply courses to find out more.

CCCG’s colleges also offer GCSE and Functional Skills courses in English and Maths. Find out more and apply here.

CCCG awarded Beacon Standard and Commended Status in two award areas by the Association of Colleges

CCCG celebrates commendation in two categories for the Association of Colleges 2023/24 Beacon Awards

Capital City College Group (CCCG) is delighted to announce that it has achieved Beacon Standard and received Commended Status in two award areas for the Association of Colleges (AoC) 2023/24 Beacon Awards.

CCCG joins a host of prestigious colleges in being commended in two award areas. The college group has been recognised for its high level of innovation, impact and sustainability in the following categories:

  • The City & Guilds Award for College Engagement with Employers
  • The AoC Award for Widening Participation

The City & Guilds Award for College Engagement with Employers commendation recognises CCCG’s innovative approach to offering high-quality, industry-led, responsive training to Londoners, with a thoughtful and collaborative approach to reaching under-represented groups within the Digital and Creative industries. CCCG has established meaningful relationships with external stakeholders, from tech industry leaders to local associations, and continues to connect learners with employers through training, internships, placements and live projects.

AOC beacon award certificate

The AoC Award for Widening Participation commendation is a reflection of CCCG’s unique policy of offering all adults free education up to Level 2 via a range of short courses ranging from digital skills to massage. The 620 available courses on offer have had a profoundly positive impact on the community that CCCG serves. Last year, 74% of adult learners who had completed one of CCCGs free short courses chose to continue in education, with 47% of learners electing to pursue more substantial courses of study.

Finalists for the Beacon Awards will be announced during the AoC National Conference on 14 November.

Congratulations to everyone involved for continuing to provide exceptional opportunities to learners across London!
