Dr. Ahmad Achtar is a highly qualified Mathematics Teacher who has completed a BSc in Physics (Aleppo), an MA, PhD (London), PGCE (Surrey) and a Graduate Diploma in Mathematics (King's College London).
He teaches A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics.
Dr. Ahmad Achtar also teaches an enrichment programme on Spacetime Physics: Relativity, Black Holes and the Big Bang.
Ali is a specialist teacher of A Level Maths and Further Maths who joined Westminster Kingsway College in 2018. Ali has more than 25 years of teaching Maths in the Middle East and the UK. Ali is highly qualified and holds a BSc in Computer Science, a Masters in Industrial Maths and Scientific Computation, a Masters in Education Leadership and Management and an NPQ in Leading Teaching.
As well as teaching, Ali has significant experience as head of Maths in Cambridge and Southampton. Ali is an enthusiastic trainer of Maths teachers too, a qualified Professional Development Lead from the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM). Ali loves sharing good teaching practices and discussing new ways in which to bring out the best in students.
In his spare time, Ali loves to travel and experience new cultures. He volunteered at the Keats Shelley house in Rome for more than five years, and currently, he is a patron of the Freud Museum in London.
Angela joined Westminster Kingsway College in September 2017. Angela studied at the University of the West Indies where in 1994 she completed a BSc (Hons); followed by a Master of Science degree in Biomolecular Organisation (1996) London.
After working as a laboratory technician, Angela undertook teacher training and completed her PGCE in 2000 at Goldsmiths College, London.
Before joining Westminster Kingsway College, Angela taught GCSE and A Level Chemistry at Wimbledon College, Langley Park School for Girls, Saint Cecilia’s Church of England School, Highbury Fields for Girls School, and Duff Miller Sixth Form College.
During her teaching career, Angela completed her PhD in the field of Earth and Planetary Sciences. The experimental work was performed at the Natural History Museum in London and gave rise to two publications on the absorption of iron from iron-rich soil by molecules secreted by microbes.
In addition to teaching, Angela is a Pearson EdExcel examiner for GCSE Chemistry, and a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and Mineralogical Society of the UK and Ireland.
Anh has dedicated the last 15 years to teaching GCSE and A Level Mathematics, including Further Mathematics, in various educational settings within inner London. Anh’s experience spans secondary schools, sixth-form colleges, and their current position at Westminster Kingsway College. This extensive background has provided Anh with a deep understanding of the unique learning requirements of students at this level.
Anh’s journey into teaching began after earning a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics and furthered their qualifications by completing a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics. Anh has remained committed throughout their career to continuous improvement as an educator, with a particular focus on integrating principles of equality and diversity into their teaching and assessment practices.
Anh firmly believes that every child and young person has the fundamental right to realise their full potential. Recognising that education is one of the most significant institutions in the lives of young people, Anh is driven to support all students in achieving their educational aspirations within a diverse and fully inclusive learning environment. Anh’s ultimate goal is to contribute to breaking the link between social deprivation and underachievement, ensuring that every student can thrive academically and personally.
Cerys has a BSc in Maths from KCL and a PhD in Information Security from UCL. Cerys wrote their PhD dissertation on Dark Web Drug Markets and used Crime Science, Computer Science, Mathematics and Sociology to investigate the way that these websites and their users responded to different types of law enforcement interventions.
During their PhD, Cerys completed an internship at the Home Office working in the Cybersecurity Research Department.
After graduating Cerys worked with an LGBTQ+ Hate Crime charity to investigate the impact of transphobia on those who experience it.
Cerys studied a PGCE at the IOE and conducted a research project on the use of mark schemes as a teaching tool.
Cerys has over a decade of debate coaching experience and is interested in oracy-focused maths learning.
Clare joined CANDI in 2019 and is currently the Head of A Level Business. She has a BA (Hons) in Business Management and an M Ed in Education. Clare has been teaching for 18 years and the main focus of her career has been working with 16-18 students, who are transitioning from KS4 and preparing for higher education or employment. She has predominantly taught A Level Business throughout her teaching career and is an experienced examiner for two exam boards.
Prior to teaching, Clare worked in accounting for a well-known manufacturing company where she gained valuable industry experience. She enjoys mentoring entrepreneurs to help them realize their ambitions.
Dominic joined City and Islington College in September 2019; he completed his Bachelors Degree in English Literature at King's College in 1996 and his Masters Degree in English- specialising in literary Biography - in 1998. On completing his studies, Dominic trained as an English teacher and has taught across all three English A Level subjects as well as other subjects, such as Classical Civilisation and Media Studies. He has over 20 years of experience in post-16 education, working in both Sixth Form and Further Education Colleges, and has wide experience as head of department before taking up his current role.
Edward has taught Computer Science and IT at City and Islington College since 2008 and has taught A Level Computer Science at the Sixth Form Centre since 2017.
Prior to becoming a teacher, Ed spent 19 years as a Programmer and Software Engineer, working for Marconi, Logica and Reuters.
Ed has a BA (Hons) in Classical Literature, History and Philosophy and an MPhil in Ancient Greek History, both from the University of Oxford.
After studying for a PGCE, he spent 5 years teaching in secondary school. He especially enjoys helping learners develop as programmers and supporting their project work in the second year of the course.
Jen has been teaching biology for eight years and a member of the CANDI teaching staff for two. They studied exercise science with a focus on neuroscience and biomechanics in Australia which led to three years as an exercise practitioner working with patients who had experienced neurological disorders. Upon completing their teacher training in Melbourne, Australia, Jen moved to London six years ago.
Jen is deeply passionate about sharing a love of learning with every student, working to create an inclusive and welcoming classroom in which students enjoy being.
Joe completed his degree in English and Drama at the University of Surrey before moving on to complete his PGCE at the Institute of Education in London.
He is a highly experienced teacher and spent a number of years teaching English and Drama in a range of different secondary schools in London. He then moved to Spain where he taught English before returning and completing an MA in Film Studies at the University of Westminster.
He began teaching Film Studies at Westminster Kingsway College in 2006 and has passed on his knowledge to many students over the years.
Mehmet is highly trained with an MSc in Business Information Technology from Middlesex University, London, a PGCE in Post Compulsory Education and Training, from Greenwich University, London, and a City and Guilds Level 5 Subsidiary Diploma in Teaching Mathematics, London.
Before joining Westminster Kingsway College, Mehmet worked in various educational organisations as an ICT Tutor and Lecturer. For instance, he worked in Ealing, Hammersmith, and West London College for 13 academic years and delivered several ICT-related qualifications like Functional Skills in ICT and Mathematics/ Numeracy, GNVQ in ICT, BTEC in ICT, A Level in ICT and a HNC/HND in Computing.
Mehmet joined Westminster Kingsway College’s Soho Centre in October 2017 delivering Functional Skills in ICT and Mathematics courses. Mehmet also worked for a year at City and Islington College where he delivered a BTEC National in ICT.
In 2022, Mehmet moved to the Westminster Kingsway Kings Cross Centre to deliver a joint access course (Foundation degree course) with Staffordshire University, and BTEC National in ICT course, and an AS level in Computing course, where he continues to provide excellent teaching to his students.
Pascale joined City and Islington College as a teacher in Charge of Chemistry in August 2021. Pascale studied at Imperial College, London, where she completed a Masters in Chemistry and an MRes in Biomedical Sciences. Pascale then obtained a PhD from the UCL School of Pharmacy, researching the structure of DNA found in chromosomes.
On completing her studies, Pascale worked in cancer research in both Switzerland and at Imperial College. She has co-authored several papers on the development of anti-cancer drugs and published protein crystal structures on the Protein Data Bank.
After a career change to become a teacher, Pascale’s interests have focussed on making chemistry engaging for young people through a combination of developing practical work and real-life examples.
Rachel joined Westminster Kingsway College in 2015. She studied at Roehampton University where she completed her BSc (Hons) in Biological Science with Psychology followed by her PGCE in Secondary Science. Upon completing her PGCE Rachel joined Westminster Kingsway College to teach BTEC Applied Science Level 2 and Level 3 as well as A Level Biology.
Since joining WestKing, Rachel has had a number of roles including E-learning leader and is currently the Head of Year 12 A Levels.
Ricky joined City and Islington College in August 2023. He has over ten years' experience working in secondary schools and sixth forms. He completed his Bachelor's degree in English and American Literature at the University of Kent in 2010. He has specialised in teaching English A levels for the past six years, and he has also taught A levels in Media Studies and Film Studies. In addition to teaching, he has contributed educational articles to the English and Media Centre's MediaMagazine, and he has five years' experience as an English A level examiner for OCR.
As a media lecturer Roxanne has 20 years of experience of teaching on a BA in digital media, Foundation Degree in media production and BTEC in film and television. Roxanne has been a course leader of the A level Media Studies programme at Westminster Kingsway College for eight years. Roxanne has a Masters in Film and television from Middlesex University, PGCE from City University and a Diploma in Public Relations. Having worked in the creative industry as a production manager for 6 years on a range of broadcast documentaries, and public relations films. Roxanne has also worked in local radio as a news presenter and in Public Relations as an account manager for fashion companies.
Roxanne has diversified into areas such as photography, video editing and enyoy learning a range of production techniques. They have continued to work on projects and is currently managing a documentary which looks at the changing face of London, from the perspective of a photographer. Roxanne is regularly informed on current political, and cultural debates through their established contacts with academics at the University of London, Goldsmiths College, UCL and having social links to journalist, photographers and artists.
Roxanne has a passion for learning and their aim is to instill those values in their students through empowering and encouraging them to have confidence in their ability to make choices, express themselves and to change the negative perceptions that is sometimes associated with students from disadvantage backgrounds.
Sajib joined City and Islington College in August 2016 as an A Level Physics and Electronics Teacher and is currently the Head of Physics.
Since joining the College Sajib has helped to develop a curriculum that focuses on developing student's analytical and problem-solving skills through practical activities giving them the confidence to reach their goals in the subject.
Before joining CANDI, Sajib taught in a secondary school focussing on GCSE and A Level Physics. Before working in schools Sajib worked for 3 years at the MHRA for a team responsible for licensing new medicines in the UK.
Sajib has an MSci in Physics from the Imperial College London, a PGCE in Physics and Maths at UCL Institute of Education Associate Member and a teaching scholarship from the Institute of Physics.
Sajib is also a qualified FA coach and has been coaching a youth football team in North London for 4 years.
Sam is an A Level specialist teacher who is in charge of Biology at CANDI. She has a degree in Biology and Psychology from Newcastle University and a Masters in Ecosystem Health from the University of Edinburgh. Sam has worked in A Level teacher since 2011 and she has a passion for helping students understand Biology in a wider context. Sam particularly likes genetics and ecology as part of Biology and understanding how these areas interact.
As part of a team of teachers, Sam has published articles on teaching in different research journals and has delivered seminars at several different conferences.
Silvia, born in La Rioja, Spain, has 18 years of experience teaching Spanish in London, both in the public and private sectors. Specialising as a teacher of A Level Spanish, she is currently working as the Spanish Subject Lead, overseeing the curriculum.
Silvia is a DELE examiner by Instituto Cervantes and examines for AQA's Speaking component. She holds a BA Honours in Modern Foreign Languages and a PGCE in Modern Foreign Languages. Silvia is passionate about sharing her love for languages and fostering excellence in language education, with a particular emphasis on Hispanic culture.
