ABOUT THE COURSE

This course is an excellent course for career progression purposes or to study further or higher in the health and social care sector. This course is intricately designed to tutor you in the importance of health and social care: its roles and responsibilities, and safeguarding within the sector. 

The course is the vocational element of a study programme. The study programme is made up of multiple components. These components include the vocational element (which is health and social care), your work placement opportunity and various enrichment activities.

The course is studied on-site at Camden Road, and it is vital all lessons are attended to ensure you are able to reach your full potential. A personal tutor will be assigned to you and they will support you throughout this course. The personal tutor will also support you with your university application during term 1. A work placement officer will meet with you to discuss your specific career choices and together you will work towards securing a work placement that suits this pathway.

Extended Diplomas have two one-year programmes. You need to finish the first year before moving on to the second.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

You will access inspirational teaching sessions that will help you to understand important topics in this industry. You will look at the wide range of employment opportuniites in this sector.

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You will need:

  • Grade 4 or above in maths and English plus one science
  • Successful completion of the level 3 (Year 1) Foundation Diploma in Health and Social Care
  • Reference from the previous year demonstrating attendance above 88%
  • Enhanced DBS certificate

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

This course is assessed via practical observation, assignment writing and external examination. You will start this course in September 2023 and the external examinations will be held nationally in January 2024.

Successfully completed assignments are graded Pass, Merit and Distinction. You will be timetabled weekly in our Skills Lab. This lab affords you the opportunity to complete practical tasks in a realistic working environment. The benefit of this is that you will be supported to develop the necessary practical skills before attending your work placement.

If you will be aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31st August prior to the start date of your course and you have the legal right to remain in the UK for the duration of your programme then your study with us will be free. Please see here for the documents you will need to show us.

Adults - Level 3

If you will be aged 19 to 23 prior to the start date of your course, and do not already have a full Level 3 qualification, you may be eligible for a Level 3 entitlement, in which case your study with us will be free. If you are older, or already have a Level 3, we have many other Level 3 courses that are also free to study. Otherwise, you will have to pay the fees yourself or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTER?

Progression into university. You can also progress into employability with this course. This course enables you to chose a career in the NHS or Social Work sector.

MEET SOME OF THE TEACHERS

Julie Golding

Julie’s journey has been shaped by a strong commitment to learning, teaching, and making a positive impact in the health and social care sector. Her role as a qualified counsellor allows her to provide a safe and non-judgmental space for clients to explore their thoughts, feelings, and challenges. Julie strongly believes in the importance of mental health awareness, which prompted her to become a Mental Health First Aider Instructor in April 2021.

In March 2019, Julie achieved a Level 4 IQA Internal Quality Assurance. Her journey has been characterised by adaptability and innovation. From October 2014 to July 2015, Julie served as an Interim Curriculum Lead and Health and Social Care Lecturer at the College of Northwest London. This experience showcased her ability to take on leadership responsibilities while remaining committed to student development.

Julie achieved a BA (Hons) degree in Housing Management and Development at Westminster University in 2007 as well as a PGCE at Canterbury Christ Church University in 2014.

Julie began her career at City and Islington College in October 2018, as a Health and Social Care Lecturer nurturing the talents of diverse students and guiding them towards successful careers. 


Esther Koroma

Esther was with City and Islington College from 2011-2016 and rejoined in September 2022. Esther successfully obtained a BSc (Hons) in Psychology from the University of East London, an MA in Development and Emergency Practice (Human Rights) at Oxford Brookes University and a PGCE/DTLLS at the University of Greenwich.

Esther has a decade of experience in teaching 16+ age groups and has taught a range of courses on BTEC, CACHE, OCR, and Gateway curriculum.  Esther contributes to enhancing learners' critical thinking skills and has achieved increases in achievement and success rates.  Esther finds the concepts studied in the MA in Development and Emergency Practice which includes human right to education; adequate housing, civil society, and social media platform; environment and disaster; and research invaluable learning insights for teaching and delivery. 

Esther has industry experience as a volunteer in assisting and helping vulnerable adults and people living with dementia in residential homes and those with mental health conditions in communities. Other interests of Esther include fundraising, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), advocacy in the alleviation of poverty, democracy, and world affairs.
