ABOUT THE COURSE

This qualification is built on four mandatory units that form the fundamental knowledge and understanding of health and social care principles. Units 1 and 2 appear in all sizes of
the qualification. The Certificate also includes a choice of optional specialist units, hereby providing an opportunity to develop a broader understanding of the health and social care sector, including factors that affect individuals’ lifestyle choices and their health; and the effective communication skills that can be transferred to other sectors.
In addition, it introduces a limited number of specialist areas and the opportunity to acquire some of the practical skills identified by employers as the fundamental building
blocks for future competence in the care sector workplace.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

You will study a range of units as part of the health and social care qualification.

To provide a flavour of what these might be, they may include topics on: Human Lifespan Development, Health and Social Care Values, Effective communication, Healthy living, Human body systems and Promoting health and well-being.

WHAT WILL I NEED?

Learners will have gained a minimum of a grade 3 in GCSE mathematics and and also a grade 3 in GCSE English prior to this course.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Assessment is by external examination and assignment completion or course work.

WHAT WILL IT COST?

Aged 16-18


If you will be aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31st August prior to the start date of your course and you have the legal right to remain in the UK for the duration of your programme then your study with us will be free. Please see here for the documents you will need to show us.

This course is free for learners who are 16-18 years old to study.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTER?

Learners who have successfully completed this qualfication can progress onto a level 3 qualification health and social care, if the relevant GCSE qualifications have also been met.

MEET SOME OF THE TEACHERS

Esther Koroma

Esther was with City and Islington College from 2011-2016 and rejoined in September 2022. Esther successfully obtained a BSc (Hons) in Psychology from the University of East London, an MA in Development and Emergency Practice (Human Rights) at Oxford Brookes University and a PGCE/DTLLS at the University of Greenwich.

Esther has a decade of experience in teaching 16+ age groups and has taught a range of courses on BTEC, CACHE, OCR, and Gateway curriculum.  Esther contributes to enhancing learners' critical thinking skills and has achieved increases in achievement and success rates.  Esther finds the concepts studied in the MA in Development and Emergency Practice which includes human right to education; adequate housing, civil society, and social media platform; environment and disaster; and research invaluable learning insights for teaching and delivery. 

Esther has industry experience as a volunteer in assisting and helping vulnerable adults and people living with dementia in residential homes and those with mental health conditions in communities. Other interests of Esther include fundraising, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), advocacy in the alleviation of poverty, democracy, and world affairs.


Alice Chinwe Woodroffe

Alice joined City and Islington College in 2014 and is highly experienced in childhood studies and has completed a ProfGCET at Canterbury Christ Church University, Early years Professional Status with London Metropolitan University and HND with Hackney Community College.

Alice has industry experience as a Nursery Manager and over two decades experience of working in various Health and Social Care Settings. Alice is also an overseas trained teacher in Accounts and Economics.

Alice believes in self-development, creating environment that fosters learning and giving learners the opportunity to thrive and achieve lifelong skills that enables them to fulfil their potential. Alice enjoys meeting people and learning about different places and cultures.


Elithia Yekeye

Elithia is a dedicated and accomplished educator with a diverse background that uniquely equips them for their role as a teacher at City and Islington College. Elithia holds a BSc Honors in Economics and a BSc Honors in Health and Social Care and understands the complexities of economic systems and the nuances of healthcare and social services.

Elithia’s journey into education took a purposeful turn when they achieved a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Health and Social Care. This deliberate choice reflects Elithia’s passion for imparting knowledge and nurturing future professionals in the field. Prior to their teaching career, Elithia garnered valuable insights from the banking and care sectors, which enriched them to teach with real-world perspectives.

Elithia’s teaching career spans back to 2007 specialising in Health and Social Care both theoretical foundations and practical applications which is instrumental in fostering the growth of students pursuing Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications in Health and Social Care.

Before joining CANDI, Elithia worked at Harrow and East Buckshire Colleges and has vast experience in various educational settings and honed their adaptability and effectiveness as an educator, enabling them to cater to a diverse range of learning styles and needs.

Elithia’s dynamic teaching style, coupled with a rich professional background bridges the gap between academic knowledge and real-world practices. Their commitment to empowering students with comprehensive insights makes them an invaluable asset to City and Islington College as they continue to shape the next generation of professionals.
