ABOUT THE COURSE

A grade 4 or higher in GCSE English Language is a requirement for many higher education courses and careers, including those in the humanities.

Throughout the course, you will develop enhanced verbal and written communication skills, through a variety of speaking and listening activities, as well as improving your written English skills by constructing arguments in essays, using correct grammar and learning to match your style to the audience and the purpose.

You will also be introduced to literature from the English Literary Heritage, including Shakespeare, and be taught how to accurately and fluently read, understand and respond to the texts. Analysis and evaluation of a wide range of texts, such as novels and poetry, are also included to help you develop your analytical skills.

The GCSE is graded using the linear 9-1 system, with examinations in June.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

During the course you will read, write about and discuss:

A range of literary fiction texts for Paper 1: Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing.

A range of non-fiction texts, which might include autobiographies, biographies, diaries, letters, travel writing and leaflets for Paper 2: Writers' Viewpoints and Perspectives.

GCSE English courses include a Spoken Language assessment, which takes the form of a presentation in class and responding to questions and feedback.
