ABOUT THE COURSE

A grade 4 or higher in GCSE Mathematics is a requirement for many higher education courses and careers, including those in science, teaching and nursing.

Throughout the course, you will be equipped with a solid understanding of fundamental mathematical concepts and principles including numbers, algebra, geometry, measures, statistics and probability.

The GCSE is graded using the linear 9-1 system, with examinations in June.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

The topics covered are:

  • Number
  • Algebra
  • Ration, proportion and rates of change
  • Geometry and measures
  • Probability
  • Statistics

 

WHAT WILL I NEED?

There are two pathways available for this qualification - Foundation Level and Higher Level.

For the Foundation Level, you will need:

  • GCSE Mathematics at grade 2

For the Higher Level, you will need:

  • GCSE Mathematics at grade 3

All applicants must have an assessment and interview to confirm that the course is suitable for them.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

The course is assessed by two written exams, each worth 50% of the final marks - you may use a calculator for one of the exams.

If you will be aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31st August prior to the start date of your course and you have the legal right to remain in the UK for the duration of your programme then your study with us will be free. Please see here for the documents you will need to show us.

GCSE Mathematics is necessary for all students wanting to enter higher education. It is also a qualification asked by employers.

MEET SOME OF THE TEACHERS

Mariusz Zurawski

Mariusz joined The College of Haringey, Enfield and North and East London in September 2012. He is a fully qualified Further Education Lecturer with a focus on providing exceptional educational experiences to a diverse student body. With several years of experience, he has developed a reputation for building strong relationships with his learners, offering support and guidance throughout their educational journeys. Mariusz's teaching style is characterised by his ability to create a positive and engaging classroom environment, often incorporating humour to make the learning experience enjoyable for his students.

Holding a DTLLS teaching qualification, Mariusz specialises in a broad range of subjects, including GCSE Maths, Functional Skills Maths, Level 3 Mathematics Units in Access to Higher Education in Computing, and IT courses from Levels 1 to 3. Along with his dynamic teaching methods, Mariusz employs a variety of teaching and learning approaches to ensure that his lessons are both engaging and challenging. His commitment to fostering a supportive and enjoyable learning environment sets him apart as an outstanding educator.


Jakia Afroz

Jakia completed a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics followed by an MSc in Mathematics in 2010 from Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh. Afterward graduation, Jakia worked as a Lecturer at a private college in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

After migrating to the UK, Jakia continued teaching with Unique Sixth form, located in North London, since 2014 as a Mathematics teacher of KS3, KS4/GCSE (Foundation and Higher Maths) and KS5/A-level (General and Further Maths).

Jakia joined CONEL in December 2022 and is working as a GCSE maths tutor and in the Unique Sixth form role. Alongside her roles at CONEL, Jakia is a Regular Examiner of Pearson (EdExcel) and has been marking GCSE and A Level (Maths and Further Maths) papers since 2019.


David Augustine

David became a member of the former Enfield College in August 2005, which subsequently underwent mergers with Conel College and then CCCG. His role at that time was that of a Basic Skills Lecturer in Mathematics. Before this position, David initiated his professional journey in 1985 by teaching Statistics and Economics to year 11 and 12 students in India and Iran.

David pursued his education at Calicut University in India, where he obtained a Master's Degree in Economics and Statistics. Additionally, he completed a Bachelor's in Education from Annamalai University, also located in India. Upon his relocation to the United Kingdom, David further enhanced his qualifications by undertaking a 3-year Certificate of Education Course with City & Guilds. He specialized in Mathematics at Level 5 through South Bank University in London.

Due to his extensive wealth of expertise and pedagogical knowledge, David adeptly instructed learners of various levels, ranging from Pre-Entry to Level 2, KS4, Access to Teaching, Access to Nursing, and those with severe learning difficulties. His teaching subjects encompass Mathematics and Digital Skills.


Reza Orak

Reza holds MSc in Engineering Management from Brunel University and also QTLs (Qualified Teacher and Lerning Skills Status). Reza joined CONEL college January 2016, and fully qualified in teaching maths related subjects such as Functional Skills, GCSE, Drug Calculation, and Engineering. Exprecienced teaching different range of students 16-18 and 19+ with different learning styles and difficulties. 2017 Excellent Teacher Award Winner.
